This tour guiding company was set up by Avril Nanton after she was made redundant in her mid-fifties. She had always been interested in history, black history in particular, but had not ever thought about how she could use the information she had clogging up her brain. She had been attending black history courses with Robin Walker, author of When We Ruled, since the 1990s so had a great deal of black history information to pass on. After failing to get a new working position, she met a friend who encouraged her to take up tour guiding. She attended the University of Westminster, passed her exams and set up the business in 2016. Her first walk was called Black Statues Around Westminster. She realised that there were many statues that represented Black Londoners, but no one was talking about them. The walk became her most popular.
Since that time, Avril has set up many more walks, taking in the black history of various parts of London: City, Tottenham, Islington and Hyde Park. She has also added presentations to her portfolio and now works with many different companies including the Ministry of Defence (MOD), the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Alexandra Palace, as well as many schools and universities in the UK and USA. Since the coronavirus era she has been prolific on Zoom, not only putting on her own presentations, but working with others putting on Black history courses and information. [email protected]
